DarkSpace Transmission 0.01.01 DESIGN: Androids

Welcome to the first deep dive transmission for DarkSpace. We’re going to be taking a closer look at the various aspects of DarkSpace and talking through how you can use them in your own game.
Androids
When we were bouncing around the idea of how to make androids, droids, robots, automata, etc. we were of two minds - androids are a species and androids are an archetype. As I was bouncing around the options, I finally came to the conclusion that they can be both. Looking at the vast body of science fiction, sometimes an android can have its own archetype like Roy Batty and his replicants and sometimes a droid is just a droid that does stuff like R2-D2 from Star Wars. So, I decided to make them both a species, Android, and an archetype, the Multi-Function Android.
When you make your character, you can choose to be an android with the Life Support Trait which removes your need to breathe and eat, though you do still need to Rest for a recharge and you don’t have access to The Triad. Then you can choose one of the six heroic classic archetypes - Strong, Quick, Tough, Clever, Wise, and Charming. Your Background can still be one of your own design or one of the twenty that we provide in the book. Lastly, you still have a Motivation - Survivor, Virtuous, or Vile. or…
You can be an Android species with the optional Multi-Function Android (MFA) archetype, available only to android characters.
This archetype is all about the Functions. In addition, to Life Support, you either choose or roll 3 more times on the Species Traits Table. There are 20 different species traits to choose from in DarkSpace! So you can make your MFA whatever you want it to be. Is it an imperial probe droid? Flight, Multiple Arms and Covert Communication. K-9 from Doctor Who? Keen Senses, Tracking Sense, and Technical Knack. Those are your archetype (class) talents. You then add Background, Motivation, and gear like normal.
There’s a Talents table for when you level up that includes Hardware Upgrade which lets you gain another Species Trait and Software Upgrade which lets you take an additional Background.
