Radical Clerics
September 16th is Mexican Independence Day! On this day in 1810, Catholic priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla gave the Grito de Dolores or Cry of Dolores, a stirring speech that sparked revolution. Hidalgo was passionate about giving economic opportunities to the people, some of which conflicted with the Viceroy of Spain. This led to his proclamation of Mexican Independence and march across Mexico raising over 100,000 followers. Though Hidalgo was captured and executed in 1811, his legacy led the country to victory and he is still seen as the Father of Mexico.
In fantasy RPGs, clerics and priests are often portrayed as pious and sometimes pacifistic. Miguel Hidalgo was not that. He was involved with the people, a firebrand, and wartime leader. Consider examples like Hidalgo when you are creating the cleric and priest NPCs.
Here are Five Radical Clerics for you to use.
